Identify story elements from the novel, Hurricane Song.  Be sure to post your responses to theses questions on your blogpage.  If you can’t post onto your blogpage, put your response on paper.

· Setting – A description of the setting in the story AND words/phrases/quotes from the story that help illustrate the setting.

· Conflict – A description of the major conflict(s) in the story and how it is resolved AND words/phrases/quotes from the story that related to the conflict.  What types of conflict were present?  Internal? External?

· Characterization – A description of 2 of the major characters in the story AND words/phrases/quotes from the story that are used in the story to reveal his/her personality.   What methods  did Volponi use to help you to “see” the characters in the story?

· Symbolism – A description of the symbolism and how it connects to the story’s central meaning.  What are SYMBOLS from the story?  (Hint: things that are very important to the characters and the story.)

· Theme – What is the underlying message of the story? For example, is the story about love, patriotism, regret?

· Mood - How does the author make the reader feel? For example, do you feel happy, sad, or sentimental as you read the story?

Tuesday, March 30th

Today you will need to complete our group’s novel wikipage.  Your group will need to contribute a movie, responses to discussion questions, summary of novel and a comparison of your experiences to those of the book’s characters.

Discussion Director - Your job is to respond to at least three questions for your group to discuss Hurricane Song

The responses should create be a discussion of the novel, not “yes” or “no” or simple fact recall.

Creative Connector - Your job is to find connections between the book and the outside world.  Your group’s experiences are the connections.

You will be comparing/contrasting the experiences of the people in your group with what Miles went through in the Superdome.

Artful Artist - Your job is to create a PhotoPeach movie in response to the novel.  You must choose pictures that are representative of the story.  I do not recommend using PhotoStory but those of you who insist, here is a notesheet.  Once your PhotoPeach movie is complete, embed it onto your wikipage.  Click here for a How To Video

Your presentation must have a minimum of 20 pictures and it must also include text to help explain your story.  The text can be on a separate slide or on the slide with the picture.  Be sure to select music to accompany your film.

Super Summarizer - You must  summarize the book.  Your summary should be at least three paragraphs.

Your job is to choose at least fifteen events from your reading that you feel are important.  Your task is to be able to explain why these events are important to your group.

Reflection questions

All Write Round Robin:  Take your group’s prompt and write a response on the prompt sheet. Circulate the prompt sheet around your group.

  1. Do any of the characters change in the story?
  2. How are you different from one of the characters? Pick one and explain.
  3. If you had been the main Character, Miles, would you have acted differently? Explain why or how.
  4. How did you feel about this story? Would you recommend it to someone else? Why or why not?
  5. What do you think was the best part of the story? Why?

Characters and events

CHARACTERS
Miles: Main Character.  The story is told from his perspective
Pop: Miles’s father.  He is a musician who has not had much  contact with his son Miles.
Fess: Fellow musician and friend of Pop and Uncle Roy
Uncle Roy: Pop’s brother.  He is also a musician
Cyrus: A dishwasher who works at Pharoah’s Club.  He is the one who  felt as though he was going to die on the slaveship.
Cyurs’s  daughter and granddaughters
Preacher Culver and his family
Cain: Football player from Miles’s school  Turned out to be a  bully and leader of a gang
Dunham: Football player from Miles’s school.  Turned out to be a  bully and assistant to the gang leader.
Sergeant  Scobie: Soldier who treated them well.
Hancock: Mean and nasty soldier
STORY EVENTS
  1. Miles and Pop evacuated to the  Superdome.
  2. Pop and Miles left the Superdome.
  3. Cain getting beaten  up by a family.
  4. After they left the Superdome, they saw looting and stealing.
  5. Soul Patrol helped  out.
  6. Cyrus  jumped to his death.
  7. Bathrooms in Superdome overflowing and  nasty.
  8. Cain and crew burned people out for protection money.
  9. Secondline funeral  march for Cyrus.
  10. Pop and Miles fought off thieves trying to steal a piano and  suit of armor.
  11. When they made it to Pharoah’s they played music to celebrate  being home
  12. They were rescued from Pharoah’s and taken to the Astrodome.
  13. Miles talked to his  mother and she wanted him to come back home.  He wanted to stay with Pop  instead.
  14. The fight for the piano was a bad one.  Miles was getting  choked and Pop used his horn to save him
  15. Saw store with a sign  “Looters will be shot;”  they saw people with guns and they were in a  shoot out

Friday, March 26th

Don’t cry because I am absent.  :-)   You have assignments to complete in my absence.  (Go figure.)


Complete writing assignment: “Our society treats movie actors, athletes, and musicians as if they were heroes.  Do you think they are worthy of this type of treatment?  Why or Why not?”  Your response must be a minimum of 100 words; post it to  your blog or complete it on paper.
